“I have pain deep in my butt, especially when I stand a lot, and sometimes it tingles into my leg.” One of my favorite NKT relationships is deep to superficial, or tonic to phasic. The deep muscles that centrate joints act as synergists for the global more superficial muscles. Problems arise when those deep muscles become the primary movers. In this case the piriformis became the primary mover for a dysfunctional gluteus maximus. That overworked piriformis tightened up and entrapped the sciatic nerve. Release of the piriformis followed by activation of the glute, and happy client.
